Dozer “In The Tail Of A Comet” (Heavy Psych Sounds)

2020-05-21T20:50:17+00:00May 21st, 2020|

Heavy Psych Sounds reissue the first three albums of the Swedish legendary band Dozer: 2000’s In The Tail Of A Comet, 2001’s Madre De Dios, and 2003’s Call It Conspiracy. Three masterpieces of the European stoner scene. These three records elevated the scene to a higher level and gave Dozer the scepter of the Scandinavian stoner movement. In the post-Kyuss era, Dozer, along with bands like Los Natas and Acid King, brought a flurry of pure, desert-style monolithic riffs and tons of fuzz guitars. The songwriting on all these three albums was what really distinguished Dozer from the other bands of the early 2000s. The band had a very big influence on the European stoner bands and it can definitively be said that Dozer are one of the European stoner godfathers. Dozer’s last album was Beyond Colossal in 2008, and it’s unknown if they will ever return back with a new release.

As with hundreds of other young Swedish bands, Dozer was the obvious answer to the boredom of a small town youth in a land where the sun seldom visits. After forming in 1995, Dozer emerged in 1998 with their debut 7″ which was awarded “Single of the Week” in Kerrang! magazine. Dozer quickly progressed beyond their early influences and created a style of their own incorporating modern elements into their classic heavy rock sound. A sound that always has been intensely heavy but yet also strongly song and melody driven by the distinctive vocals of singer Fredrik Nordin. Dozer has carefully cultivated a following like none other and a reputation second to none due mostly assuredly to their constant touring and explosive live shows. These simple Swedes have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the world of stoner rock, often placed upon the same pedestal as the fathers of the movement: Kyuss and Monster Magnet. With the release of their fifth full length album Beyond Colossal, these sons of Sweden seemed poised to teach the Underground a lesson or two about what Rock and Roll is all about. After a hiatus the band came back again with some live shows over the last years.

Brant Bjork ‎”Brant Bjork” (Heavy Psych)

2020-05-07T20:41:46+00:00May 7th, 2020|

Limited edition red spatter vinyl. “Even before you know it’s self-titled, and even before you read the LP liner notes, you know it’s all Brant Bjork. The man who has become the ambassador of Californian desert rock indeed plays every instrument across his 13th studio full-length, Brant Bjork. This in itself is something of a departure from recent offerings, as on 2018’s Mankind Woman, Bjork worked closely with guitarist Bubba DuPree (Void), and both 2016’s Tao of the Devil and 2014’s Black Power Flower were constructed around the Bjork-led Low Desert Punk Band. Maybe revisiting his 1999 debut, Jalamanta, for a Heavy Psych Sounds 20th anniversary reissue in 2019 had some effect on Bjork’s mindset in terms of working solo, but he’s come too far in the ensuing decades to repeat himself, and the songs on Brant Bjork — recorded and mixed by Yosef Sanborn in Joshua Tree and mixed by John McBain (ex-Monster Magnet) — show that, whether it’s the mellow roll of ‘Duke of Dynamite’ or the signature take on classic heavy rock in ‘Jesus Was a Bluesman’ and percussion-backed funk of opener ‘Jungle in the Sound’. There’s no mistaking Brant Bjork, and on Brant Bjork, he strips his songwriting style to its core and brings out the organic vibe that’s made him desert rock’s most crucial practitioner. His legacy and pedigree are unmatched, with tenures in Kyuss/Vista Chino and Fu Manchu as well as the sadly short-lived Ché, Ten East, and others, but it is Brant Bjork’s solo work that has had his greatest impact and shown him to be of inimitable character in craft and style. His unrelenting creativity and one-of-a-kind voice are writ large over the Brant Bjork album, which is precisely how it should be, and after more than two decades of exploring out in the sands, Bjork continues to find new ways to manifest not just the landscape of the desert, but the spirit of his relationship to it. In short, he is a master, and this is the record that bears his name. You miss it at your own peril.” –JJ Koczan

Acrimony ‎”Hymns To The Stone” (Burning World)

2020-03-27T02:29:24+00:00March 27th, 2020|

The first album by Acrimony (from 1994) for the first time ever on vinyl! Remixed and mastered in 2019 from original studio files by James Plotkin. Includes new artwork from JimBob Isaac (Taint/Hark). Acrimony’s influences were varied, from ’70s rock to trance techno, but their riffs were undeniably heavy, with lyrics exploring the isolation of their hometown and the same kind of disaffection that once launched Black Sabbath to the outer reaches of doom from a blues rock beginning.

“Before Monolord, Graveyard, Greenleaf, and Truckfighters, one band stood at the dawn of Sweden’s Kyuss-inspired desert rock movement. With their groundbreaking debut EP and seminal Ode to Io album, Lowrider spawned thousands of imitators. Now, at long last, the progenitors return with blistering new album Refractions, delivering on their mythic status as founders of a worldwide phenomenon.”

Shrinebuilder “Shrinebuilder” (Neurot)

2020-03-13T20:33:50+00:00March 5th, 2020|

It’s not so much a band name as a statement of intent. Not a one-off supergroup, but rather the first chapter in what promises to be an epic narrative. More to the point, though–Shrinebuilder is the meeting of musical monoliths, the Justice League of underground heaviness: Scott “Wino” Weinrich of Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, and The Hidden Hand on guitar; Al Cisneros of Om and Sleep on bass; Dale Crover of Melvins and Altamont on drums; Scott Kelly of Neurosis on guitar. And all four of them on vocals. With these four living legends in the room, the term “highly anticipated” doesn’t even come close.  Recorded in just three days, a sufficiently superhuman time-frame for a group of musicians who often pass for superhuman themselves in certain circles, Shrinebuilder delivers on the tacit promise of a riff-roaring Wino + Neurosis + Om + Melvins power-psych explosion, but it also delivers a sum that no one anticipated. “It’s like a crazy experiment that actually worked,” Crover enthuses. “I don’t think we could have asked for something better.”  “It’s one of those things that I would have never thought of or dreamed of,” Kelly concludes. “It doesn’t always sound like a collaboration between members of these four bands. There’s something else that happens within that structure. It’s about music as a religion, as a belief system, as a means of communication–and in the end I think the music speaks for itself. I’ve already listened to this project more than any other project I’ve ever worked on. I listen to it, and I listen to it loud.

Hazemaze “Hymns Of The Damned” (Cursed Tongue)

2020-03-13T20:34:10+00:00February 28th, 2020|

Repress on orange vinyl. ‘Hymns Of The Dead’ is so much heavier than its predecessor. It is darker and much more into the heavy crushing doom field, losing part of the eerie fuzzy rhythm and the stoner smoke. The crushing riffs and bass guitar lines are all over the place now, with amazing grooves and psychedelia motifs.

Bongripper ‎”Hippie Killer” (Great Barrier)

2020-01-31T04:30:53+00:00January 31st, 2020|

A double LP reissue of 100 copies on black vinyl of Bongripper’s 2007 album. Superb stoner-doom from Chicago! ‘Hippie Killer’ is so good, you’ll want to develop a massive marijuana habit right away and spend your days lurking through the ten part expedition of doom laden valleys and psychedelic post-rock peaks, bong in hand. After the intro piece, Bongripper literally rips your head off and dumps all sort of riff heavy hallucinogens right down your neck.

Egypt “Cracks and Lines” (Valley Of The Kings)

2019-11-15T05:14:23+00:00November 15th, 2019|

The stoner/doom wall this group creates is deceptively melodic. Egypt knows how to construct songs that are undoubtedly heavy, but simultaneously catchy. Egypt’s influences, such as Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, enabled able to create a mood and tone, but also to craft music that stucks. Egypt takes cues from those forefathers and seems devoted to making music that is artful as it is pounding.

Cannabis Corpse “Nug So Vile” (Season Of Mist)

2019-10-31T23:38:35+00:00October 31st, 2019|

CANNABIS CORPSE’ new album ‘Nug So Vile’ is an onslaught of dank death that stands on the shoulders of the US metal giants that precede them. Feat. Phil “Landphil” Hall (MUNICIPAL WASTE), the trio wield 420-ton riffs like weapons of iron and steel. Each track unfolds deranged fables of stoner horror. Illicit grass forfeiture, alien pot forms, interstellar greenhouse planets, murderous THC zombies, and supernatural smoke sessions are delivered by crushing hits like “Cylinders of Madness,” “Blunt Force Domain,” and “Dawn of Weed Possession.” CANNABIS CORPSE habitually raises their pot-inspired madness with each album, and the classic US death metal assault of ‘Nug So Vile’ is another new high.

Firebreather “Under A Blood Moon” (Riding Easy)

2019-10-11T03:15:06+00:00October 11th, 2019|

Fire is what happens when a carbon based object is consumed by oxygen. That chemical reaction is fitting to the sound of Firebreather: the riffs are suffocating, the rhythms fast-moving and all-consuming. It’s so blindingly and deafeningly monolithic, don’t be surprised to be gasping for air while listening. The Gothenburg, Sweden trio has a streamlined focus on driving, symphonic riffs in the vein of High On Fire, Inter Arma and their tour and label-mates Monolord. The guitar and bass tones are, quite simply, entrancing. Like watching flames engulf a forest, the billowing guitar tones are simultaneously beautiful and destructive, while the rhythms sway and lunge with vicious precision. “It’s riff-based, heavy as fuck, but with a groove to it,” explains vocalist / guitarist Mattias Nööjd, formerly of popular Swedish doom merchants Galvano. “We had gotten off a tour with Monolord in February of 2018 and by that time we had the song ‘Firebreather’ done,” but soon thereafter new drummer Axel Wittbeck joined the fold. “Once Axel had joined, it was like the flood gates opened,” says bassist Kyle Pitcher. “The rest of the album just came together.” Under A Blood Moon was recorded at Elementstudion in Gothenburg with engineer Oskar Karlsson, who also recorded the band’s lauded 2017 self-titled debut on Suicide Records.

Brant Bjork “Jalamanta” (Heavy Psych)

2019-09-27T03:48:14+00:00September 27th, 2019|

Double LP version. Heavy Psych Sounds present a reissue of Brant Bjork’s Jalamanta, originally released in 1999. Brant Bjork: “Jalamanta was a life changing record for me. It’s the record that launched my journey as Brant Bjork. Listening to the tapes 20 years later was amazing. Tony Mason and myself were transported back to that moment in time. Jalamanta was a first for both Tony and myself. My first record as a solo artist and his first record as an engineer. We didn’t think twice about re-mixing it. With our combined experience over the years, we knew we could take Jalamanta to the place we always wanted it to go… and we did. Dig it.” Features a Blue Öyster Cult cover, “Take Me Away”.

Produced by Brant Bjork. Recorded by Tony Mason at Rancho De La Luna, Joshua Tree, California, February 1999. Re-mixed by Tony Mason and Brant Bjork at North Star Ave., 29 Palms, California, March 2019. Re-mastered by John McBain, JPM Mastering, San Francisco, California. All songs written, composed and performed by Brant Bjork. Words and vocals on “Toot” by Mario Lalli, additional guitars by Mario Lalli and Gary Arcy. Ecstatic Vision “For The Masses” (Heavy Psych)

2019-09-27T03:48:12+00:00September 27th, 2019|

Philadelphia heavy psych quartet Ecstatic Vision (regarded as the second coming of vintage Hawkwind) return with For the Masses. After bursting onto the scene with their 2015 tribal-psychedelic LP, Sonic Praise (HPS 110LP/LTD-LP), touring the USA with Yob and Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, crushing Roadburn, then quickly releasing a for-heads-only, noisy, psychedelic-garage record to weed out the weak (Raw Rock Fury, 2017), Ecstatic Vision have pulled themselves out of the muck to deliver their finest album to date. Recorded in Philadelphia at Retro City Studios with Joe Boldizar and mixed/mastered by Tim Green (Earthless, The Melvins) at Louder Studios in Grass Valley, CA, Ecstatic Vision’s recent fuzzed-out sound has been sculpted it into a hi/fi psychedelic wonderland. This album is the closest the band has gotten to achieving the energy of their untouchable live shows on tape. EV took a simpler approach on the art this time, using the Spanish dream-team of Edko Fuzz and Bangalore Studios. For The Masses blends tripped-out synth, semi-catatonic desert driving tunes, Afro-tribal funkadelic bibes, troglodyte-Detroit rock grooves, acid freak-outs, ethereal psychedelic hymns, and mind-altering krautrock into Ecstatic Vision’s outsider take on modern music. It’s like if Tangerine Dream jammed with Lemmy and the Asheton Brothers and decided to play some world music and free jazz in 1971.

Acid King “Busse Woods” (Riding Easy)

2019-09-06T04:23:42+00:00September 6th, 2019|

NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!!  Every small town encompasses that one long stretch of forest where kids run to get high, jam out, and just escape. For San Francisco-based stoner metal trio, Acid King vocalist, guitarist, frontwoman, and mastermind Lori Woods, Busse Woods offered such a retreat in her native Illinois as a teenager in the ’70s. This 3,700-acre section of the Cook County Forest Preserve system beckoned her during high school with its buffet of dope, frisbee challenges, and Black Sabbath blaring from numerous trunks well past sundown. Those days left such an imprint on Lori she titled Acid King’s second full-length released in 1999 Busse Woods. Celebrating its 20th year with a special reissue on Riding Easy Records and tour in 2019, it represents the heart and soul of the band. The album still exudes the same sense of mysticism it did upon release in 1999. As the story goes, Lori and bandmates Joey Osbourne (drums) and Brian Hill (bass) entered a practice space to write the full-length follow-up to their debut Down With The Crown. Organically, they jammed out five originals and a take on “39 Lashes” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar. As everything gelled, they recorded with legendary engineer Billy Anderson. Prominent Bay Area artist Frank Kozik initially released the CD on his Man’s Ruin record label. Then “everything fell apart.” Behind the scenes, personal and professional relationships crumbled. Marriages ended. Lineups shifted. In the face of such tumult, the music of Busse Woods rarely got its due on stage in the aftermath, even though the aesthetic would prove influential. In the middle of various reissues and re-releases, Acid King kept touring internationally throughout Europe and Japan from 2005-2015. In between this time they jammed on riffs and started to craft songs but ultimately didn’t kick it into high gear to finish the release until 2015. They reawakened in the studio with the 2015 opus, Middle Of Nowhere, Center Of Everywhere. While the new music caught critical acclaim and fan approval, a funny thing happened, and Busse Woods also came back to life. Its songs would generate the most streams on Spotify. They’d generate loud responses in concert and became their most critically acclaimed release to date. The stars aligned. Twenty years down the line, it felt only right for Lori and Co. to revisit this landmark and give it the proper tour it deserves.
