Dozer “In The Tail Of A Comet” (Heavy Psych Sounds)

2020-05-21T20:50:17+00:00May 21st, 2020|

Heavy Psych Sounds reissue the first three albums of the Swedish legendary band Dozer: 2000’s In The Tail Of A Comet, 2001’s Madre De Dios, and 2003’s Call It Conspiracy. Three masterpieces of the European stoner scene. These three records elevated the scene to a higher level and gave Dozer the scepter of the Scandinavian stoner movement. In the post-Kyuss era, Dozer, along with bands like Los Natas and Acid King, brought a flurry of pure, desert-style monolithic riffs and tons of fuzz guitars. The songwriting on all these three albums was what really distinguished Dozer from the other bands of the early 2000s. The band had a very big influence on the European stoner bands and it can definitively be said that Dozer are one of the European stoner godfathers. Dozer’s last album was Beyond Colossal in 2008, and it’s unknown if they will ever return back with a new release.

As with hundreds of other young Swedish bands, Dozer was the obvious answer to the boredom of a small town youth in a land where the sun seldom visits. After forming in 1995, Dozer emerged in 1998 with their debut 7″ which was awarded “Single of the Week” in Kerrang! magazine. Dozer quickly progressed beyond their early influences and created a style of their own incorporating modern elements into their classic heavy rock sound. A sound that always has been intensely heavy but yet also strongly song and melody driven by the distinctive vocals of singer Fredrik Nordin. Dozer has carefully cultivated a following like none other and a reputation second to none due mostly assuredly to their constant touring and explosive live shows. These simple Swedes have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the world of stoner rock, often placed upon the same pedestal as the fathers of the movement: Kyuss and Monster Magnet. With the release of their fifth full length album Beyond Colossal, these sons of Sweden seemed poised to teach the Underground a lesson or two about what Rock and Roll is all about. After a hiatus the band came back again with some live shows over the last years.

Brant Bjork ‎”Brant Bjork” (Heavy Psych)

2020-05-07T20:41:46+00:00May 7th, 2020|

Limited edition red spatter vinyl. “Even before you know it’s self-titled, and even before you read the LP liner notes, you know it’s all Brant Bjork. The man who has become the ambassador of Californian desert rock indeed plays every instrument across his 13th studio full-length, Brant Bjork. This in itself is something of a departure from recent offerings, as on 2018’s Mankind Woman, Bjork worked closely with guitarist Bubba DuPree (Void), and both 2016’s Tao of the Devil and 2014’s Black Power Flower were constructed around the Bjork-led Low Desert Punk Band. Maybe revisiting his 1999 debut, Jalamanta, for a Heavy Psych Sounds 20th anniversary reissue in 2019 had some effect on Bjork’s mindset in terms of working solo, but he’s come too far in the ensuing decades to repeat himself, and the songs on Brant Bjork — recorded and mixed by Yosef Sanborn in Joshua Tree and mixed by John McBain (ex-Monster Magnet) — show that, whether it’s the mellow roll of ‘Duke of Dynamite’ or the signature take on classic heavy rock in ‘Jesus Was a Bluesman’ and percussion-backed funk of opener ‘Jungle in the Sound’. There’s no mistaking Brant Bjork, and on Brant Bjork, he strips his songwriting style to its core and brings out the organic vibe that’s made him desert rock’s most crucial practitioner. His legacy and pedigree are unmatched, with tenures in Kyuss/Vista Chino and Fu Manchu as well as the sadly short-lived Ché, Ten East, and others, but it is Brant Bjork’s solo work that has had his greatest impact and shown him to be of inimitable character in craft and style. His unrelenting creativity and one-of-a-kind voice are writ large over the Brant Bjork album, which is precisely how it should be, and after more than two decades of exploring out in the sands, Bjork continues to find new ways to manifest not just the landscape of the desert, but the spirit of his relationship to it. In short, he is a master, and this is the record that bears his name. You miss it at your own peril.” –JJ Koczan

Acrimony ‎”Hymns To The Stone” (Burning World)

2020-03-27T02:29:24+00:00March 27th, 2020|

The first album by Acrimony (from 1994) for the first time ever on vinyl! Remixed and mastered in 2019 from original studio files by James Plotkin. Includes new artwork from JimBob Isaac (Taint/Hark). Acrimony’s influences were varied, from ’70s rock to trance techno, but their riffs were undeniably heavy, with lyrics exploring the isolation of their hometown and the same kind of disaffection that once launched Black Sabbath to the outer reaches of doom from a blues rock beginning.

With their groundbreaking debut EP and seminal Ode to Io album, Lowrider spawned thousands of imitators. Now, at long last, the progenitors return with blistering new album Refractions, delivering on their mythic status as founders of a worldwide phenomenon.”

Shrinebuilder “Shrinebuilder” (Neurot)

2020-03-13T20:33:50+00:00March 5th, 2020|

It’s not so much a band name as a statement of intent. Not a one-off supergroup, but rather the first chapter in what promises to be an epic narrative. More to the point, though–Shrinebuilder is the meeting of musical monoliths, the Justice League of underground heaviness: Scott “Wino” Weinrich of Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, and The Hidden Hand on guitar; Al Cisneros of Om and Sleep on bass; Dale Crover of Melvins and Altamont on drums; Scott Kelly of Neurosis on guitar. And all four of them on vocals. With these four living legends in the room, the term “highly anticipated” doesn’t even come close.  Recorded in just three days, a sufficiently superhuman time-frame for a group of musicians who often pass for superhuman themselves in certain circles, Shrinebuilder delivers on the tacit promise of a riff-roaring Wino + Neurosis + Om + Melvins power-psych explosion, but it also delivers a sum that no one anticipated. “It’s like a crazy experiment that actually worked,” Crover enthuses. “I don’t think we could have asked for something better.”  “It’s one of those things that I would have never thought of or dreamed of,” Kelly concludes. “It doesn’t always sound like a collaboration between members of these four bands. There’s something else that happens within that structure. It’s about music as a religion, as a belief system, as a means of communication–and in the end I think the music speaks for itself. I’ve already listened to this project more than any other project I’ve ever worked on. I listen to it, and I listen to it loud.

Hazemaze “Hymns Of The Damned” (Cursed Tongue)

2020-03-13T20:34:10+00:00February 28th, 2020|

Repress on orange vinyl. ‘Hymns Of The Dead’ is so much heavier than its predecessor. It is darker and much more into the heavy crushing doom field, losing part of the eerie fuzzy rhythm and the stoner smoke. The crushing riffs and bass guitar lines are all over the place now, with amazing grooves and psychedelia motifs.

Bongripper ‎”Hippie Killer” (Great Barrier)

2020-01-31T04:30:53+00:00January 31st, 2020|

A double LP reissue of 100 copies on black vinyl of Bongripper’s 2007 album. Superb stoner-doom from Chicago! ‘Hippie Killer’ is so good, you’ll want to develop a massive marijuana habit right away and spend your days lurking through the ten part expedition of doom laden valleys and psychedelic post-rock peaks, bong in hand. After the intro piece, Bongripper literally rips your head off and dumps all sort of riff heavy hallucinogens right down your neck.

2019-11-15T05:14:23+00:00November 15th, 2019|

The stoner/doom wall this group creates is deceptively melodic. Egypt knows how to construct songs that are undoubtedly heavy, but simultaneously catchy. Egypt’s influences, such as Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, enabled able to create a mood and tone, but also to craft music that stucks. Egypt takes cues from those forefathers and seems devoted to making music that is artful as it is pounding.

Cannabis Corpse “Nug So Vile” (Season Of Mist)

2019-10-31T23:38:35+00:00October 31st, 2019|

CANNABIS CORPSE’ new album ‘Nug So Vile’ is an onslaught of dank death that stands on the shoulders of the US metal giants that precede them. Feat. Phil “Landphil” Hall (MUNICIPAL WASTE), the trio wield 420-ton riffs like weapons of iron and steel. Each track unfolds deranged fables of stoner horror. Illicit grass forfeiture, alien pot forms, interstellar greenhouse planets, murderous THC zombies, and supernatural smoke sessions are delivered by crushing hits like “Cylinders of Madness,” “Blunt Force Domain,” and “Dawn of Weed Possession.” CANNABIS CORPSE habitually raises their pot-inspired madness with each album, and the classic US death metal assault of ‘Nug So Vile’ is another new high.

Firebreather “Under A Blood Moon” (Riding Easy)

2019-10-11T03:15:06+00:00October 11th, 2019|

Fire is what happens when a carbon based object is consumed by oxygen. That chemical reaction is fitting to the sound of Firebreather: the riffs are suffocating, the rhythms fast-moving and all-consuming. It’s so blindingly and deafeningly monolithic, don’t be surprised to be gasping for air while listening. The Gothenburg, Sweden trio has a streamlined focus on driving, symphonic riffs in the vein of High On Fire, Inter Arma and their tour and label-mates Monolord. The guitar and bass tones are, quite simply, entrancing. Like watching flames engulf a forest, the billowing guitar tones are simultaneously beautiful and destructive, while the rhythms sway and lunge with vicious precision. “It’s riff-based, heavy as fuck, but with a groove to it,” explains vocalist / guitarist Mattias Nööjd, formerly of popular Swedish doom merchants Galvano. “We had gotten off a tour with Monolord in February of 2018 and by that time we had the song ‘Firebreather’ done,” but soon thereafter new drummer Axel Wittbeck joined the fold. “Once Axel had joined, it was like the flood gates opened,” says bassist Kyle Pitcher. “The rest of the album just came together.” Under A Blood Moon was recorded at Elementstudion in Gothenburg with engineer Oskar Karlsson, who also recorded the band’s lauded 2017 self-titled debut on Suicide Records.

Brant Bjork “Jalamanta” (Heavy Psych)

Double LP version. Heavy Psych Sounds present a reissue of Brant Bjork’s Jalamanta, originally released in 1999. Brant Bjork: “Jalamanta was a life changing record for me. It’s the record that launched my journey as Brant Bjork. Listening to the tapes 20 years later was amazing. Tony Mason and myself were transported back to that moment in time. Jalamanta was a first for both Tony and myself. My first record as a solo artist and his first record as an engineer. We didn’t think twice about re-mixing it. With our combined experience over the years, we knew we could take Jalamanta to the place we always wanted it to go… and we did. Dig it.” Features a Blue Öyster Cult cover, “Take Me Away”.

Produced by Brant Bjork. Recorded by Tony Mason at Rancho De La Luna, Joshua Tree, California, February 1999. Re-mixed by Tony Mason and Brant Bjork at North Star Ave., 29 Palms, California, March 2019. Re-mastered by John McBain, JPM Mastering, San Francisco, California. Ecstatic Vision “For The Masses” (Heavy Psych)

2019-09-27T03:48:12+00:00September 27th, 2019|

Philadelphia heavy psych quartet Ecstatic Vision (regarded as the second coming of vintage Hawkwind) return with For the Masses. After bursting onto the scene with their 2015 tribal-psychedelic LP, Sonic Praise (HPS 110LP/LTD-LP), touring the USA with Yob and Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, crushing Roadburn, then quickly releasing a for-heads-only, noisy, psychedelic-garage record to weed out the weak (Raw Rock Fury, 2017), Ecstatic Vision have pulled themselves out of the muck to deliver their finest album to date. Recorded in Philadelphia at Retro City Studios with Joe Boldizar and mixed/mastered by Tim Green (Earthless, The Melvins) at Louder Studios in Grass Valley, CA, Ecstatic Vision’s recent fuzzed-out sound has been sculpted it into a hi/fi psychedelic wonderland. This album is the closest the band has gotten to achieving the energy of their untouchable live shows on tape. EV took a simpler approach on the art this time, using the Spanish dream-team of Edko Fuzz and Bangalore Studios. For The Masses blends tripped-out synth, semi-catatonic desert driving tunes, Afro-tribal funkadelic bibes, troglodyte-Detroit rock grooves, acid freak-outs, ethereal psychedelic hymns, and mind-altering krautrock into Ecstatic Vision’s outsider take on modern music. It’s like if Tangerine Dream jammed with Lemmy and the Asheton Brothers and decided to play some world music and free jazz in 1971.

Acid King “Busse Woods” (Riding Easy)

2019-09-06T04:23:42+00:00September 6th, 2019|

NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!!  Every small town encompasses that one long stretch of forest where kids run to get high, jam out, and just escape. For San Francisco-based stoner metal trio, Acid King vocalist, guitarist, frontwoman, and mastermind Lori Woods, Busse Woods offered such a retreat in her native Illinois as a teenager in the ’70s. This 3,700-acre section of the Cook County Forest Preserve system beckoned her during high school with its buffet of dope, frisbee challenges, and Black Sabbath blaring from numerous trunks well past sundown. Those days left such an imprint on Lori she titled Acid King’s second full-length released in 1999 Busse Woods. Celebrating its 20th year with a special reissue on Riding Easy Records and tour in 2019, it represents the heart and soul of the band. The album still exudes the same sense of mysticism it did upon release in 1999. As the story goes, Lori and bandmates Joey Osbourne (drums) and Brian Hill (bass) entered a practice space to write the full-length follow-up to their debut Down With The Crown. Organically, they jammed out five originals and a take on “39 Lashes” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar. As everything gelled, they recorded with legendary engineer Billy Anderson. Prominent Bay Area artist Frank Kozik initially released the CD on his Man’s Ruin record label. Then “everything fell apart.” Behind the scenes, personal and professional relationships crumbled. Marriages ended. Lineups shifted. In the face of such tumult, the music of Busse Woods rarely got its due on stage in the aftermath, even though the aesthetic would prove influential. In the middle of various reissues and re-releases, Acid King kept touring internationally throughout Europe and Japan from 2005-2015. In between this time they jammed on riffs and started to craft songs but ultimately didn’t kick it into high gear to finish the release until 2015. They reawakened in the studio with the 2015 opus, Middle Of Nowhere, Center Of Everywhere. While the new music caught critical acclaim and fan approval, a funny thing happened, and Busse Woods also came back to life. Its songs would generate the most streams on Spotify. They’d generate loud responses in concert and became their most critically acclaimed release to date. The stars aligned. Twenty years down the line, it felt only right for Lori and Co. to revisit this landmark and give it the proper tour it deserves.

Colour Haze “She Said” (Elektrohasch)

2019-08-09T03:20:35+00:00August 9th, 2019|

Second (regular) edition with 3-panel-fold-out in inside-out-highgloss heavy cardboard and 2 x 180 gr. Over four years since ‘All’ (2008) and two years since recording started, its hard to believe that ‘She Said’, the new album by stoner/heavy psych masters Colour Haze is here! It’s been a long, gnarly road for the band to get to its completion. While ‘All’ dabbled with some subtle psychedelic production and even pop structures, the new one kicks off with the sprawling title track featuring piano playing by Christian Hawellek. Keyboards aren’t a completely new thing for Colour Haze, as Hawellek has contributed at least some Fender Rhodes on all the albums since the self-titled ‘Colour Haze’ (2005). However the string and horn arrangements are new. This is not to say that they’ve gone orchestral pop. Those elements, which also include some congas on the first track, are used sparingly but effectively, enhancing key moments on just a few tracks. While no one could really duplicate Colour Haze’s tones, you could hear their influence in Sungrazer, Causa Sui, The Machine, My Sleeping Karma, Hypnos 69, Arenna, and many more. They are all great bands, but Colour Haze remains by far your favourite because their music is so incredibly rich, despite normally sticking to a simple mix of guitar, bass, drums and occasional vocals.

Nebula “Holy Shit” (Heavy Psych Sounds)

2019-08-02T03:18:21+00:00August 2nd, 2019|

22 years after their first release (1999) and ten years after their last album (2008), Nebula are back. And you’re thinking “Holy shit!” right now, you pretty much nailed it. Holy Shit is Nebula’s first LP since 2009’s Heavy Psych, and it quickly puts to rest the question that’s loomed since guitarist/vocalist Eddie Glass, bassist Tom Davies, and drummer Michael Amster announced the band’s reformation in 2017: Nebula are still Nebula. It’s there in the inimitable space-grunge of “It’s All Over”, or the take-a-drag-and-be-gone “Let’s Get Lost”, or the way “Tomorrow Never Comes” manages to be so, so heavy and laid back at the same time. It’s in the paradise-psych of “Gates Of Eden” and even the snoring you hear before the devilish “Man’s Best Friend” kicks in to open the album (the studio couch became a crash spot). Since the days of 1998’s Let It Burn EP and the now-classic To The Center debut album (HPS 066CD/LP/LTD-LP), Nebula have always been just a little more dangerous. Just a little more unhinged. Holy Shit shows this front-to-back for the essential part of their character it is, and yet it’s not trying to be anything they’ve done before, whether it’s those early outings or Heavy Psych or 2001’s Charged (HPS 087CD/LP/LTD-LP), 2003’s Apollo, or 2005’s Atomic Ritual. It’s a sixth Nebula album — something for which even the most ardent of fans could hardly have hoped. The basic tracks were done in two days, recorded at Mysterious Mammal Studios in LA with Matt Lynch (also of Snail) at the helm. Leads and loops and feedback effects were done live by Glass and Davies as they recorded the basic tracks, just the way they’d do it on stage, and overdubs followed after as needed. A glut of material was produced and whittled down to the core of what you hear here. A sixth Nebula album. And when you hear it, you’ll find yourself saying that title all over again. Cover art by Robin Gnista.

Nebula “Charged” (Heavy Psych Sounds)

Heavy Psych Sounds reissue Nebula’s legendary Charged album, originally released back in 2001 on Sub Pop Records, in a new remastered version. Charged is the second full-length album by the stoner rock legends, it’s also the last album featuring former Fu Manchu bandmate, Mark Abshire, on bass and before the original band lineup re-united in 2018. The third album track “Giant” was featured in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 (2002) and will be also found as a demo bonus song on the remastered 2019 album version. Charged is still considered one of Nebula’s most important and distinctive records to date. A heavy fuzz rock trip into the desert, a wheel of hot lava, and the sheer power of almighty riffs only an act like Nebula could have ever created.

Masters of Reality “Masters of Reality” (Delicious)

2018-12-21T05:45:00+00:00December 21st, 2018|

“One can’t speak of California’s famed desert rock movement without mentioning the visionary producer/musician Chris Goss. The so-called Godfather of the Joshua Tree-centered scene, Goss has produced famed and acclaimed albums by groups like Queens Of The Stone Age, Foo Fighters, Kyuss, Screaming Trees, and numerous others. Before he was known as a renowned producer though, he was the singer/guitarist, and only consistent member of one of the most influential-yet-forgotten hard rock groups of all time: Masters of Reality. Masters Of Reality (whose name was appropriately taken from a Black Sabbath song) had the distinction of being the only group signed to two different hip-hop labels of historical note: Def Jam and Delicious Vinyl. Originally label mates with Public Enemy and Slayer, Masters Of Reality’s self-titled debut album was released by Def American in 1988. Two years later, Delicious Vinyl founders Matt Dike and Mike Ross, huge Masters fans, bought the band’s contract from Rick Rubin and re-released the album with new cover artwork to renewed acclaim and commercial success. So many years later, Masters Of Reality’s debut still feels like a hard-hitting breath of fresh air in a modern landscape of over-produced rock music. It’s in this sense of tribute that Delicious Vinyl presents this re-issue of the acclaimed record. The audio has been re-mastered, and its original ‘Blue Garden’ artwork has been restored, while Rick Rubin’s hard rock production chops shine bright, and blare loudly in equal measure, on highlights like the foot-stomping ‘John Brown’, the frantic live-staple ‘Domino’, and proto-stoner pieces like ‘Doraldina’s Prophecies’ and ‘Kill The King.’ Pressed on translucent blue vinyl.”

Dopethrone “Transcanadian Anger” (Totem Cat)

2018-12-14T15:52:19+00:00December 14th, 2018|

2018 album. Dopethrone have their tongue firmly in cheek with their song titles, but they deliver a punishing tour de force when it comes to their music. This band has the scuzziness of Electric Wizard and Weedeater, but the pace of ’80s hardcore bands like Discharge. Dopethrone truly are, in their own words, ‘foul Canadian mix of yellow snow, crackhead diarrhea, blood, tears and broken dreams’. Black vinyl version.

Ted Lucas “Ted Lucas” (Yoga)

2018-12-09T01:42:57+00:00November 23rd, 2018|

Ted Lucas, the sole published album by singer-songwriter and master guitarist Ted Lucas has achieved an almost mystical reputation amongst aficionados and collectors. Ted Lucas is a seamless marriage of moody odes and raga-style instrumentals regarded by many to be, simply put, the greatest private press folk/psych album ever recorded. Lucas was a fixture in the Detroit rock scene of the sixties and seventies. His first band, The Spike Drivers, relocated to San Francisco to become one of the very first true psych bands, the Motor City’s answer to Jefferson Airplane and The Byrds. Following that band’s collapse, Lucas returned to Detroit and paid bills doing session work with Motown. And there he recorded, in 1972, the demo for Warner Brothers which would become Ted Lucas, released in two private editions in 1975 and known informally to friends and family as “The OM Album”, after Lucas’ own label. The album was released with artwork by the legendary Stanley Mouse originally created for Jimi Hendrix. A troubled figure whose lack of commercial capitalization and general disgust with the music business fueled a tragic narrative of self-destruction and an untimely death at 53, Lucas nevertheless reflects a regal confidence on this album, both in terms of his Sandy Bull-level guitar workouts and his masterful songwriting, as reflected in covers by the Blind Boys of Alabama, Richard Buckner, Phil Cook, and Father John Misty. As singular as Skip Spence’s Oar (1969), as liminal and uncanny as David Crosby’s If I Could Only Remember My Name (1971), Ted Lucas is a collection of elevated and elegiac cosmic folk music, presented here in a newly re-mastered edition from the original tapes with high-quality tip-on sleeves and the original back cover art.

It took three days to make this recording… so we naturally called it Tres Dias. Dig it.”

Alastor “Slave To The Grave” (Riding Easy)

2018-11-23T04:49:36+00:00November 23rd, 2018|

Alastor hearken to the days when heavy rock was the music of the rebel, the occult adherent and lurker in the shadows, not hipster bros. Theirs is the doom sound for those who discovered it on the edge of town, in the cold rain, perhaps, as an escape from the squares who’ll never understand. Drenched in heavy, distorted darkness and steeped in occult horror that will make your skin crawl and ears cry sweet tears of blood, Slave To The Grave pulls no punches in the Swedish band’s unabashedly bleak themes. The band formed under a bad moon in 2016, consisting of Dharma Gheddon (vocals, bass, acoustic guitar and organ), Lucy Ferian on lead & acoustic guitar and organ, Terry Fying on guitar and Levi Athan on drums. The quartet released its epic three-song debut album Black Magic in early 2017 via Twin Earth Records, followed by the two-track Blood On Satan’s Claw EP on Halloween the same year. Joining forces with Riding Easy Records in 2018, they hunkered down to summon this seven-track hateful gospel with engineer Magnus Sörensen.

Having achieved commercial success and plenty of critical acclaim, it may come as a surprise to some people to know that American rock band Clutch had a release on Earache way back in their early days, before the release of their first album. Now with their 12th album coming up later this year, we’ve brought back these early recordings on CD. 5 tracks, including all three from the band’s second ever single “Passive Restraints” which remains a key part of their set list to this day, as well as the track “Pile Driver”, previously only available on the extremely rare 12″ edition of Clutch’s first ever single way back in 1991.

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats “Wasteland” (Rise Above)

2018-10-19T00:33:29+00:00October 19th, 2018|

You can probably feel it already. Amid the shimmering haze of dusk. In the marrow of your bones. The darkness is getting darker. Malevolent forces are on the prowl. The wasteland is beckoning. Uncle Acid is on his way home. A disorientating journey through Kevin Starrs (AKA Uncle Acid)’ wonkiest dreams, Wasteland glides majestically from punchy and direct psych-rock anthems like “I See Through You” and “Shockwave City” to the viscous, somnambulant ooze of the eight-minute “No Return” and the twinkly-eyed bad trip of the album’s mesmerising title track. Recorded at the legendary Sunset Sound studio in Los Angeles, Wasteland boasts the kind on irresistibly raw and exuberant sound that only the greatest bands can generate. Yet more confirmation that Uncle Acid exist in their own musical universe, Wasteland is also a powerful cautionary tale: one rooted in the alien landscapes of Starrs’ imagination, but with a very clear connection to the deranged chaos of today’s political world. As humanity cheerfully circles the plughole, Dystopian visions and present-day horrors have become more-or-less interchangeable, making Wasteland’s ghoulish surrealism a lot more pertinent and disturbing in the process. While most musicians seem content to chase their own (or other people’s tails), Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats remain proud and resolute individualists and Wasteland is simply their most powerful and memorable spurge of creativity to date. Masterfully echoing the magical atmospheres of heavy music’s turbulent past while sounding entirely unlike anything else available to human ears, this is what happens when the shadows come to life and suffocating darkness, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats style, is the only show in town.

Brant Bjork “Mankind Woman” (Heavy Psych Sounds)

2018-10-12T16:03:32+00:00October 12th, 2018|

Mankind Woman is the thirteenth solo record by Brant Bjork. Although this is indeed a Brant Bjork record it is the first record Brant Bjork solely collaborates with a producer and co-writer, his LowDesertPunkBand guitarist and friend, Bubba Dupree. Only Brant and Bubba wrote and performed the music along with guest appearances by bass player Armand Secco Sabal, Nick Oliveri, and vocalist Sean Wheeler who has been a touring member of the LowDesertPunkBand. In March of 2018, the recording took place at Zainaland, a creative Villa owned by Brant Bjork’s wife, Zaina Alwan, in the California desert town of 29 Palms. The record was recorded and engineered by Yosef Sanborn who also owns and operates Massive FX pedals in Los Angeles. Multiple pedals designed by Yosef were used by Brant and Bubba for this record. Additional tracks were recorded by Bubba Dupree at Brant Bjork’s home studio in Venice beach California. Brant Bjork and Bubba Dupree describe the sound of Mankind Woman as modern classic. It is evidently clear that both Brant and Bubba specialize in the craft of the sound and feel of the music spawned in the ’60s and ’70s and this record is undoubtedly a testament to this great era of song and sound, however the intention was not to try to recapture or mimic in retro terms these influences but to strive for a contemporary quality. Brant Bjork might have gone deeper in the lyrics than on any record before. Focusing on personal sensitivities, elite hypocrisies, racism, sexism, and the daily struggle to find peace, love, and understanding in today’s American society. Once again, Brant Bjork makes here a record that reminds the listener that it was the ingredients of jazz, blues, and funk that makes rock music taste so good.

High On Fire “Electric Messiah” (Entertainment One)

2018-10-12T16:03:30+00:00October 12th, 2018|

“I had a dream about Lemmy,” says Matt Pike, explaining the inspiration behind the title of High on Fire’s triumphant eighth album Electric Messiah.
If there’s one aspect of High on Fire that warrants comparison to Lemmy’s mighty
Motörhead, it’s longevity. 2018 sees the band celebrating 20 years of the most thunderous heavy metal, with brothers-in-arms Pike, bassist Jeff Matz, and drummer Des Kensel having been firmly intact for the last dozen years. Along the way the band has forged a distinct identity of towering riffs, a propulsive rhythm section, shredding solos, and lyrics of Hessian poetry that has drawn accolades from not only the metal community (notably Decibel, Revolver, Metal Hammer, Terrorizer, Kerrang! magazines) but from mainstream music scribes as well. Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, the Chicago Sun-Times, and The Village Voice are
among the dozens of publications outside the metal scene to extol the greatness of High on Fire to curious readers.
