The instrumentals to the acclaimed 2019 collaborative album from Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, now available on vinyl.

Madlib, the prolific producer and adept sampler with a record collection spanning all genres and eras and Freddie Gibbs, the gravel-voiced braggadocios rapper, a vocal athlete. As a pair, they exude a natural chemistry and craft an alchemical music. Reunited after their widely celebrated 2014 album Piñata, Gibbs and Madlib are back with Bandana, a brand new collaboration for 2019. Bandana includes first single, “Flat Tummy Tea,” which received critical praise upon release from the likes of Rolling Stone, Billboard, Vulture, Pitchfork, FADER, GQ, and more. The album will also include features from Pusha T, Killer Mike, Yasiin Bey, and Black Thought and more.

The Professionals “The Professionals Instrumentals” (Madlib Invazion)

2020-03-20T19:52:49+00:00March 19th, 2020|

Madlib is a highly regarded and influential hip-hop producer and occasional rapper, who has left his distinct and stylized sound on classic tracks and critically beloved albums by the likes of MF DOOM (Madvillain), J Dilla (JayLib), Talib Kweli (Liberation), Georgia Anne Muldrow (Seeds), and more. Madlib’s collaborations with rapper Freddie Gibbs (Pi ata & 2019’s Bandana) are some of the most acclaimed hip-hop records of the past decade, and his various DJ mix compilations (Madlib Medicine Show, Beat Konducta) have earned high praise from a vareity of journalistic sources. On The Professionals, Madlib joined forces with fellow rapper/producer and biological brother Oh No, unleashing thirteen tracks of trippy, frequently psychedelic underground hip-hop, upon an unsuspecting public to great acclaim from fans and critics. Now, Madlib’s own imprint Madlib Invazion proudly presents the instrumental tracks for this anomalous record, which puts every twitchy, paranoid, and anomalous beat from the legendary beatsmith on full display.

Abstract Orchestra “Madvillain Vol. 1” (ATA)

2019-08-16T03:43:15+00:00August 16th, 2019|

Coming off the back of their successful album of J Dilla interpretations (and a single with Dilla’s younger brother, Illa J), this time Abstract Orchestra focuses on MF DOOM and Madlib’s collaborative work as Madvillan. Led by Saxophonist Rob Mitchell, the UK group explores jazz, TV soundtracks and film scores, combined with classic big band writing and a focus on improvisation. A jazz album as much as it is a hip-hop album, Madvillain, Vol. 1 is explores the reciprocal territory between the genres. Taking the template of their debut LP “Dilla”, they apply the same approach here, sampling the likes of Sun Ra, Bill Evans, Freddie Hubbard, George Duke, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Quincy Jones and Stevie Wonder, resulting in a jazz oriented feel and ethos which in turn lends perfectly to the deconstruction and re-imagining of Abstract Orchestra. As with their debut, all the tracks were recorded live in the studio with very few overdubs. The band itself is based on the classic jazz big band instrumentation of saxes, trumpets and trombones and features the cream of the north of England’s jazz scene who collectively have played with Jamiroquai, Corinne Bailey Rae, Mark Ronson, Martha Reeves, John Legend & the Roots, Roots Manuva and Amy Winehouse.

Madvillain “Four Tet Remixes” (Stones Throw)

Usually the only person to remix Madlib records is Madlib. But following the success of MF DOOM & Madlib’s album Madvillainy in 2004, our partners in Europe proposed having producers not normally associated with MF or Madlib to remix some of the tracks for Europe-only vinyl releases, and the Four Tet Remixes were born.

Madlib “Pill Jar” (Stones Throw)

2015-06-13T00:57:40+00:00May 31st, 2015|

“The best of the Medicine Show… kind of. Back in 2010, Madlib did the impossible and released an album and or mix tape every month for the entire year. That’s 12 full releases for the Medicine Show series and a whole lotta beats to digest. Now if you couldn’t swallow that big of a Madlib pill, then the Pill Jar is a great way to catch up. Originally put together for his 2013 Asia Tour, this puts together standout tracks from Medicine Show #1-12 on a long player sampler of sorts with guest spots from big dawgs like J Dilla, Doom, and Guilty Simpson. 20 tracks with twisted cartoon pic sleeve that seals the deal. – See more at: http://turntablelab.com/products/madlib-pill-jar-vinyl-lp#sthash.qjrHU3WI.dpuf”

Madlib “pinata beats” LP (Madlib Invazion)

2015-05-10T01:25:45+00:00September 15th, 2014|

There are few musicians – let alone beat–makers – in the world whose output in its raw form provides his listener with a full on musical experience before anything is added. Madlib is such a talent. Hip hop is his canvas, but he creates the most wondrous things with it. Before a microphone is switched on, before a rhyme even uttered, a Madlib beat stands alone as a complete thing.
Since the issue of the collaborative album with rapper Freddie Gibbs – Piñata, already being hailed as contender for rap album of the year – we’ve been asked countless times to issue the beats Madlib created for the project as instrumentals. And we’ve conceded. Piñata put Gibbs in the spotlight, one that a growing audience is finally acknowledging that he deserves. On Piñata Beats, though, it’s Madlib, quietly spinning on the center stage. Through seventeen cuts of arcane film snippets, dusted funk and soul, psych and prog rock musical diversions, Madlib proves to live up to what Gibbs once said of him: “Madlib quite simply, is music.”
